President’s Choice

An evening of socializing and networking with Community League leaders in Central and Northeast Edmonton

On November 21st the Presidents Choice event was held.  The purpose of the evening was to give community league presidents and executive members an opportunity to meet each other and share their ideas and wisdom on a number of topics that are essential to community leagues day to day operations.   In total 52 representatives attended from 26 community leagues.

The original idea to meet came from a community league volunteer who wanted to connect with other community league executives and discuss common interests and challenges.  East Community Recreation Coordinators (CRC) were involved in the program development and delivery of the evening.  The idea grew and Area 17 Community Council financially supported the venture.

The evening started with a formal welcome and a process called “speed talking” was started.  This is a takeoff on the idea of “speed dating” and groups of 8 people were given seven minutes to talk about predetermined topics and then they moved along to the next station.   This was to keep new people meeting, discussing and working together.   Ideas generated were captured on flip charts that will be soon shared with community league groups of Central and Northeast Edmonton. The groups were facilitated by CRCs and topics included:

Participants were given “contact cards” that included space for the name, community league, topic, email address and phone number of other participants and they were asked to fill in the information that they were interested in learning more about.  A one hour networking session followed and participants were encouraged to use the time to seek out the person and topic that they were interested in hearing more about.

The entire session was completed in a little over two hours.  There was a lot of positive energy and humour in the room during the session and pages and pages of good information captured to be shared.  Comments from participants were overwhelmingly positive and included:

“Was able to meet with other people and get information”

“ Really enjoyed it.  Great to hear the great things everyone’s up to”

“This was excellent! A bit rushed, but excellent”

“This was a great idea and I hope it becomes a yearly event”

“Encourage more leagues and executive members to attend”

Thanks to all community league participants and also to the East CRCs for a great networking session.
