When Riverbend embarked on its mission to green up, the task of forming a committee was surprisingly easy. People want to go green and committee members got on board unanimously to effect the changes needed to save their league dollars in the long run by making simple low cost changes to reduce energy consumption now. Light bulbs to thermostats - even the teenagers joined the work team to become the Greenagers of the league.    contact Rocky - rferoe@telusplanet.net  if you would like to ask any questions.

Aspen Gardens in its unique setting along a pristine ravine in West Edmonton, has always had a tendency to preservation of the delicate relationship with its environment. School children painted goldfish on the storm drains, to remind the community that nothing that could harm the fish should go down the drain. The hall has been retrofitted now, the skating rink graded to reduce water consumption, and future choices will be based on the environmental impact.  Email Michael if you would like to know more mki@shaw.ca

“Regarding Scona's audit, we did approach Carbon Busters first - as far as we could determine, they were the only non-residential auditors available - but the estimate was $10,700, a figure we felt we couldn't possibly get approval from the Board on. However, as 2 of the committee members are very knowledgeable, we decided that we would do it ourselves. (One member has designed a net-zero house and will begin construction this month; the other had worked with a discontinued Federal Gov. energy conservation program, therefore they were well qualified to do it.)

“In terms of getting energy audits done, I would encourage community leagues to go for the Infrastructure Audit available through the EFCL. With the grant available, it makes the cost very reasonable. However, in terms of the Green Challenge, I would say that if there are communities who feel they have members who can do a thorough assessment and produce a substantiated report which meets their respective needs, then that criteria has been met.

“With regard to other communities looking for guidance, I would be prepared to be available to discuss how Strathcona's Green Committee got started, so feel free to email at costuros@telus.net  to arrange a time to speak.
“I had a chance to devour Godo Stoyko’s book this weekend. It is excellent!! So I guess if you are wondering about the Green Challenge, I'd tell you to sign up! Get the Goody Bag with Godo’s book, a thermostat, coupons for savings, and more! Read the book! and Get Started!”    Carla!

We are pretty busy right now. Thanks for sending the bags with our membership supplies. We are in planning stages right now. We recently (with in the last 4 years) replaced all 7 of our furnaces and 2 of our 3 air conditioners so we have seen a savings there. I have made sure we have compact fluorescents in all our lights except the dimmer switch lights and flood lights. I am looking at replacing the flood light fixtures with something more efficient along with replacing the dimmer switches I not sure if they have dimmer compact fluorescents yet. We will be signing up for dual water meter this fall for the hockey rinks and are planning a leveling of the large rink. I am researching power suppliers to see what is the best for us. So we have not forgot about the challenge it is part of all the other things we are doing, a little at a time.

Thanks
