EFCL organized a May 16th information and feedback session for leagues wanting to review the proposed new RMD Zone. This zone is being proposed by a developer, and supported by City Administration. It is a combination of low density zones which include small lot single detached housing zones, duplexes/semi-detached housing and row housing. At least two types of housing would be developed on every street. Developers could choose any one of these housing types, rather than having to rezone, in order to respond quickly to the market.

The City was asked provide a summary of the civic interests that were considered during the City’s internal review of the building sites (on surplus school sites). This was part of a larger conversation discussing how the City came up with its initial preferred uses for the 11 sites. There was vigorous and thorough discussion at various levels of the organization over a two-year period regarding the best use of these building sites.

The Terwillegar Riverbend Advisory Council (TRAC) has come up with a very palatable promotion with their own label of "Terwillegar" Malbec wine released this spring, and officially launching on June 8th. They are the first League to enter such a marketing campaign where $5 from every sale goes to support TRAC projects.

After significant input from leagues, on March 19, 2013, City Council approved multiple amendments to the regulations for low density housing. Virtually every neighbourhood is impacted. The new rules are now fully in effect.
In summary, the new rules make it much easier to build duplexes and semi-detached housing on every block in every neighbourhood. It is easier to build row housing, stacked row housing and apartments in the RF3 zone – the areas zoned for up to four unit residences. These housing types can be built on smaller, narrower sites, making it possible to build higher density housing on virtually every site . . .

EFCL APPLAUDS EPSB DECISION FOR LOCAL STUDENTS OF VICTORIA SCHOOL

It was very good news to hear of today’s decision of the Edmonton Public School Board to ensure local kids get first crack at registration in their own neighbourhood. We support this move 100% and firmly believe that keeping local schools open and available to children in the immediate community is fundamental to healthy strong communities.
We were pleased to see that the local citizens spoke up for their cause and that the EPSB listened. This is a triumph for improving the quality of life in the downtown core, and in Edmonton in general.

There are more volunteers aged 18-24 than in any other age group in Canada! And they volunteer an average of 130 hours per year. We know there are lots of youth putting in volunteer hours, but given the demands of jobs, school, and extracurricular activities, it’s important to give these young volunteers great experiences so that they’ll continue volunteering in the future.

Low Density Residential Zones and the Mature Neighbourhood Overlay - Exposing the Secrets
By Brian Kropf, Planner & Community Member. Views do not necessarily reflect the views of EFCL
Much public debate has occurred in the past three weeks about the City's proposal to change the Zoning rules for residential development. The City justifies the changes by saying we need them to implement the 2009 Residential Infill Guidelines and we need them to allow a 50' wide side-by-side duplex let to be divided into 2 single family lots . . . so 2 houses replace 2 houses
