More Kids on the Ice with Sport Central's Help

We have seen a number of leagues start a successful Skate Loaner Program at their rinks and it has definitely improved the usage.  Essentially, a skate storage area is created where skates are stored by size. Kids come and sign out the skates.  That simple and we can get you the skates!

Opportunity for input into new Parking Requirements for apartments and row housing near Transit

In an attempt to create a more compact, transit-oriented city, reduced minimum parking requirements for multi-unit housing near transit are being considered, in addition to maximum parking spaces. City Administration has forwarded draft parking regulations to EFCL.
 
Administration is seeking feedback prior to doing revisions in mid-January. Your early feedback will influence city Administration’s recommendations going to Council at a public hearing targeted for March 14, 2010. However, your feedback is beneficial at any time prior to the public hearing.

In order to promote community league membership month and our September 18th Community League Day, we will be hosting a special promotional event, press conference and aerial photo in Churchill Square on Monday, September 13th. The EFCL was most disappointed to see the Edmonton Public School Board vote to close five schools and the elementary program at Spruce Avenue school on April 13. By a vote of 6-3, the trustees chose to close McCauley, Parkdale and Fulton Place Schools. Eastwood and Capilano schools were closed by a vote of 8-1.

 The Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues is urging both Edmonton school boards to adopt a new strategy to deal with surplus place in public schools.  The strategy is quite simple. EFCL has offered to partner with the City in organizing public input to numerous proposed zoning bylaw changes which will be taken to City Council in early 2010.
By January 2010 the City will be prepared to give “Information Sessions” on the Residential Infill Guidelines for Mature Neighbourhoods.    EFCL has requested these information sessions be combined with an opportunity for people to have input into interpreting the Guidelines and developing new regulations to be incorporated in the Zoning Bylaw.

One of the key jobs of the EFCL is to negotiate on behalf of its member community leagues.
For some reason this seems to be the season for wheeling and dealing, as we’re hard at it on three fronts.
So far negotiations are going very well with the City of Edmonton. We’re right on track with developing a new EFCL/City of Edmonton Partnership Agreement, which defines how we work together on community league and neighborhood development matters.
