Snow Angels
Shovelling snow can be difficult, or sometimes even dangerous, for seniors and persons with disabilities. And icy, snowy sidewalks are hazardous for everyone.
The Snow Angels program is an awareness and recognition program encouraging Edmontonians to voluntarily shovel snow for a neighbour in need like a senior or person with disabilities. The program also allows those who’ve received help to recognize the volunteers who shovel their walkways by nominating them as Snow Angels with the City of Edmonton.
How to volunteer:
Becoming a Snow Angel is easy. Just shovel snow for someone in need in your neighbourhood. If you don’t have someone in your neighbourhood, ask your community league, seniors’ centre or religious or spiritual centre if they know of someone who could use help with snow shovelling.
There is no pay for being a Snow Angel, but if you are nominated by someone, you will receive a lapel pin and letter from the mayor. Your name will also be entered into a draw to win some great prizes. Plus, you will get the satisfaction of knowing that you have made a positive difference in someone’s life.
How do you nominate your volunteer:
To nominate your volunteer, complete the nomination form at www.edmonton.ca/snowangels or 311.
Why is snow removal so important?
Snow that remains on sidewalks is hazardous for everyone, but especially for people with limited mobility who may be severely injured from falling on ice or snow. Uncleared walkways also make it difficult for people who deliver services in our city—mail carriers, water/gas meter readers, delivery drivers, firefighters and paramedics.
