Gardening, greening and how to be a sustainable community has been the main topic of conversation at the last few Snack & Chat Meetings at Westmount Community League. This included a recent presentation by a couple of speakers on Transition Towns and has helped fuel interest in the league’s Eco Garden Project..
The Community Eco Garden is a project in which all members of the community are invited to share their thoughts and skills, and of course their gardening and artistic talents! Currently there is an unused ball diamond North of Westglen Elementary School that has been designated as the garden site. Members of the Westmount Community are asked to share their experience and/or time in all aspects of this project’s development. For update information, check out their blog at :
www.westmountecogarden.blogspot.com. Westglen School, which works closely with the community league, has been named the winner of a 2010 Emerald Award in the Education category by the Alberta Foundation for Environmental Excellence. They say they could not have done it without the help of the community and parents. A very notable achievement!
Congratulations on these great efforts and for moving in a very sustainable direction. Local food and environmental awareness will provide a long term wellness benefit for everyone.
