When the Western Economic Diversification announced that grant money was available for capital recreation projects, many leagues scrambled to submit their applications. Only a few leagues were poised, ready, and had their ducks in a row.
Elmwood Community League had done their playground plan and project estimates, and had already buckled down and begun fundraising. The timing was perfect when the RinC economic stimulus package was announced.
“Our community is thrilled with the generosity that the federal government has bestowed on our project. Without this much needed support, our project in it's entirety would not have been possible,” says Nicole Akhenak, President of Elmwood. “We look forward to a continued partnership with Laurie Hawn, MP, and Western Economic Diversification as we work towards our goal. These funds will enable our community to replace a dated park which no longer meets current safety regulations; retrofit a wading pool with a hygienic modern spray deck as well as removing and re-building decrepit tennis courts and outdoor skating rink. The youth of our community will have a safe, new and vibrant play space, as well, other generations will have an enjoyable space to enjoy with family, friends and neighbours. This project will help rejuvenate our neighbourhood and help rekindle community spirit and pride!! Thank you! Merci Beaucoup! “
“Our Government, through the RInC program, is providing a timely, targeted stimulus to the economy and helping reduce the impacts of the global recession.” says Laurie Hawn, MP. The Elmwood Community League was awarded $294,667 to redevelop the John Devoldere Memorial Park.
