EFCL Weighs in On Residential Speed Reduction Project

In an effort to help the city get gauge the success of the 40 km/hour residential speed limit project, the EFCL held a meeting of the affected leagues and summarized their views.
 
In short, the leagues liked the lower speed limit, so long as it is enforced, on roads within their community.  They would also like to see additional traffic calming measures taken on collector roads on the edge of their community to help reduce traffic speed in those locations.

Opportunity for input into new Parking Requirements for apartments and row housing near Transit

In an attempt to create a more compact, transit-oriented city, reduced minimum parking requirements for multi-unit housing near transit are being considered, in addition to maximum parking spaces. City Administration has forwarded draft parking regulations to EFCL.
 
Administration is seeking feedback prior to doing revisions in mid-January. Your early feedback will influence city Administration’s recommendations going to Council at a public hearing targeted for March 14, 2010. However, your feedback is beneficial at any time prior to the public hearing.

Residents Want Better Enforcement in Reduced Speed Areas

 Residents were told that traffic speeds were falling in these neighborhoods, although one chart showed that only 24% of the motorists were travelling 40 km/hour of less.  A number of residents were frustrated to hear that the enforcement phase of the program had yet to begin. They felt the program objectives could not be met until this happened.

City Plans Residential Speed Limit Reduction Pilot Project

The speed limit of 50 km/hr will be lowered in three-to-five communities next year as the city looks for ways to address the speeding issue in residential areas.  Under a pilot program recommended by EFCL and approved October 6 by City Council's Transportation and Public Works Committee, the maximum speed in these neighborhoods will be lowered to at least 40 km/hr and perhaps as low as 30 km/hr.

Community Leagues Excluded From Funding Programs
