This year’s Trade Show will be taking on an exciting twist with a whole new slate of educational programming which will offer something of interest for everyone on Community League Boards. Created in 2011, the Blue Sky Award seeks to enable Albertan not-for-profit organizations to realize their dream projects! To help them achieve this, Manasc Isaac will donate $10,000 of consulting time toward the creation of a conceptual design or feasibility study.* This will empower the winning organization to seek partners and funding, and determine timelines for their project.

Last year, we received over 25 entries and we can’t wait to see what projects this year will bring!

A multi-million dollar project will see a park with beautified water features, natural gardens, and historical reference to honour the Community League movement over the last 100 years.  We are seeking planners, fundraisers, gardeners, designers, consultants, project managers to join us at this very crucial planning phase.   Meeting  tomorrow February 16 - be there and bring that perfect person for this job!  We need you!

EFCL promoted Community League winter vents and outdoor rinks in a first ever winter advertising campaign.  Many thanks to all of the Leagues who submitted their events for our winter promotion and to the Examiner for continuing to be one of our heartiest supporters.

28 of the 52 Community Leagues that submitted applications for the Community League Infrastructure Program(CLIP) grant received funds for 2011.  Increased funding will be available for 2012.

KaBOOM! currently has Funding Partners that will cover the majority of the funding as well as provide volunteers to help build a playground in Edmonton in June 2012.  We are working to identify nonprofit, child-serving organizations that would benefit from and embrace the process of a community-built playspace partnership.

We have seen a number of leagues start a successful Skate Loaner Program at their rinks and it has definitely improved the usage.  Essentially, a skate storage area is created where skates are stored by size. Kids come and sign out the skates.  That simple and we can get you the skates!

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) is a widely accepted set of crime prevention principles.  The CPTED premise is that the proper design and effective use of the physical environment can reduce the perception of fear and incidence of crime.  This leads to an improvement in the quality of life

More Dollars Sought for Infrastructure and Training

The EFCL is working on a proposal that would provide solar energy systems along with energy and carbon audits for a number of Edmonton Community Leagues.

The Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues has asked the Copyright Board of Canada to exempt Community Leagues from paying Tariff #21, which directs them to pay $185 each year to SOCAN

City of Edmonton is beginning the allocation process for ice time in the 2012-2013 winter in City indoor arenas and swimming pool time for outdoor pools in summer 2012 and indoor pools in winter 2012-2013

At Woodvale Community Hall October 18, the house was packed to hear what experts have to say about living local. Speaker Tony Druett made the point loud and clear that Civil Engineering should not merely be the art of directing the great sources of power in nature, but should do it for the use and convenience of Man. . .

The sun was shining and representatives from The Sun, Global TV, and City TV were there to record for posterity the fun world's largest croquet game featuring EFCL President David Dodge, Mayor Mandel, and Don Iveson.

 Aside from the 25 C temperatures, for the second year running Evansdale combined soccer and program registrations with free jumpy arenas, horse-drawn wagon rides and free hot dogs and refreshments for anyone who came. More is better as Evansdale is learning.

On July 13, EFCL hosted the second consultation on mature neighbourhood sustainability.  

Over 140 people attended the Second Annual Green Shack Wrap Up Party and enjoyed free hot dogs, jumpy things, and a most entertaining petting zoo! 

Together the Edmonton Heritage Council, Edmonton Arts Council and the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues have launched a unique project to connect people and their neighbourhoods through arts and heritage and provide up to $20,000 funding!

“An Ounce of Prevention” Special Funding Pilot calls for proposals. The funding is part of a one-time, special project funding opportunity being piloted jointly by REACH Edmonton and the Community Services Advisory Board.  Entitled “An Ounce of Prevention”, this funding will consider proposals that advance the common outcomes of safe and healthy communities and individuals shared by REACH Edmonton and the City of Edmonton’s Community Services Advisory Board

Canada Day in Riverdale is always a ‘big deal’ for the community, and this year one of the main events will be the ‘unveiling’ of two outdoor murals. Two artists were commissioned by the Riverdale Community League to paint murals on the west and south walls of Riverdale House

The EFCL is entering discussions with the Edmonton Public School Board on the controversial issue of school closures.

One of the centre’s hardest working visionaries is Dr. Robert Agostinis. The president of Terwillegar Riverbend Advisory Council (TRAC) and EFCL District H director described the opening of the $160 million facility as, “Amazing.”

Representatives from the Office of Environment will be there to talk about energy and climate change. There will be discussion about community action – what we can do at the community level, and what the best ways are to raise awareness and spread the word.

Capital City Clean Up has started a new program that can help leagues respond to problems with Graffiti. New for 2010, the Community Mural Matching Grant Program offers up to $2,000 to support non-profit community agencies that develop murals in Edmonton neighbourhoods. 

Edmonton’s 154 community leagues will soon see a significant boost in their funding, thanks to the decision reached by Edmonton City Council earlier this week.

Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011 is our next Community League Day in Edmonton, now that the members of the EFCL have decided that the third Saturday in September is a good time to hold an annual celebration.

 The EFCL is encouraging its member leagues to reach out to artists in their area, as a way to develop new programs and attract new members.

The EFCL and representatives of the city’s eleven area councils are exploring new ways of working together.

Within our business plan initiatives one of the areas that we felt support should be afforded our community partners and groups is around criminally stressed or challenged areas in the City of Edmonton.

New projects in Edmonton will help keep at-risk youth off the streets by using schools as community hubs to increase accessibility of services and providing ways for youth to participate in sport and creative opportunities. In addition, a new restorative justice project will help at-risk youth to take responsibility for their actions and learn to make positive contributions to their communities.

Without the generous monetary support from the Examiner, Servus, and the Realtors, and Firetext, and the prizes from Tim Hortons, The City of Edmonton, and United Cycle we would not have been able to orchestrate as successful an event as Community League Day was.

In order to promote community league membership month and our September 18th Community League Day, we will be hosting a special promotional event, press conference and aerial photo in Churchill Square on Monday, September 13th. Together with City Council and other partner organizations we will be replicating a map of Edmonton with helium balloons and a patchwork quilt promoting the various events happening on Saturday September 18th.  We will be taking the photo at 1030AM from the roof of Stanley Milner Library.

 Much fun was had the EFCL football toss and    Leila Rombano of Ridgewood Community League is the lucky winner of the Oilers Jersey up for grabs at our booth at the well attended event.

The EFCL has decided to file for membership in REA CH Edmonton, a new organization that is designed to coordinate crime-prevention initiatives in Edmonton. The organization’s first meeting was on June 22 at Santa Maria Goretti hall.

The meeting on Monday June 21 at the EFCL office opened up dialogue between hockey registrars and membership directors, and as a result everyone’s concerns and suggestions were heard. 

 The consultation process well underway by the City’s environment department has brought to light key issues effecting the well being of our city. “It has become quite clear with this process that the overwhelming majority of people involved in the planning of our City’s future agree that lifestyle changes are inevitable,” says Valerie Pachal, EFCL representative in the consultation process.

Edmonton community leagues were given an unprecedented opportunity on May 27 to meet and discuss issues with provincial cabinet ministers and Edmonton backbench MLAs, thanks to a date the EFCL was able to secure on the provincial Cabinet Tour.  Approximately 150 community league members (representing 60 community leagues), along with five EFCL board members, all seven EFCL staff and four Community Services staff members took advantage of the opportunity to meet with nine members of cabinet and nine backbench MLAs in a 90 minute session at Balwin Community League Hall.

The Neighbourhood Renewal program is meant to ensure that roads, sidewalks, and streetlights in our older communities are kept in good condition.  However, some community league members are becoming quite concerned about the city’s approach to streetlight upgrades. 

 On June 8, five community leagues in the south west - Heritage Point, Twin Brooks, Yellow Bird, Blue Quill and Duggan, arranged a Resource Fair and Pancake Breakfast for South West seniors at the Blue Quill Community League Hall

 The Riverbend Community League has initiated a Pace Car Program to respond to a growing traffic safety issue in the neighborhood. Under the program, area residents place “I Drive the Limit” stickers on their bumpers as a way of encouraging their neighbors to slow down.

 The City of Edmonton has been asked to create a discount package for leagues that want to cover the admission fee for their members at any indoor pool, during public swim times.

 Residents were told that traffic speeds were falling in these neighborhoods, although one chart showed that only 24% of the motorists were travelling 40 km/hour of less.  A number of residents were frustrated to hear that the enforcement phase of the program had yet to begin. They felt the program objectives could not be met until this happened.

Community gardens and environmental awareness are the focus over in the Westmount area of town these days

 Hot fun in the sun and free lemonade as community members pop by 102 Avenue which was closed to green up the parking stalls last Saturday. Downtown Edmonton CL, Next Gen Community Challenge, and EFCL greeted passers by.

A number of provincial MLAs say the cost of playgrounds could come down if the City of Edmonton would only play along.  At a June 4 meeting with the EFCL at the Provincial Legislature, Employment and Immigration Minister Thomas Lukaszuk said groups in St. Albert or Spruce Grove can build the same playground for 50-60% of the cost paid by Edmonton groups, due to the shortage of approved contractors in Edmonton, restrictions on volunteer labor and the standards required by the city administration. For example, he cited the city’s desire for concrete garbage containers, which cost $9,600 each.

 The EFCL has learned that approximately 20 community leagues have seen their application for Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) funding rejected.

Leagues can easily run this neighbourhood enhancement and community member recognition program which has a lot of long term benefits to the community.

As with all new processes communication and details need sorting out.  This update addresses concerns we have heard from leagues to date.

The Edmonton Minor Hockey Association and Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues came up with a new system to facilitate the sales of Community League memberships during hockey registration.  The objective is to eliminate all the work that the registrars have had to do for these many years and ease the strain for their volunteers.  They still support the community leagues and want to ask for a membership as part of their process.  So together we developed a new streamlined system.  

EFCL recently met with the City of Edmonton, Fire Inspector, Alberta Government Liquor and Gaming Commission, Edmonton Police, and the Public Safety Compliance Commission. Means of prevention of problem renters were discussed and the following checklist arrived from the meeting.

The City of Edmonton is excited to launch the new Continuous Monthly Membership Program to our Community League Wellness members. This program is now available (as of May 1, 2010) to all Community League members that have a current membership card.

 The Front Yards in Bloom Program is seeking nominations of beautiful front yards in your community, and Community Leagues who would like to take on the simple task of delivering the nomination package to homes in your area.

 The Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues is urging both Edmonton school boards to adopt a new strategy to deal with surplus place in public schools.  The strategy is quite simple. It calls for the boards to work with partners, such as community leagues, to find productive uses for surplus space – as opposed to shutting down the school.

The Edmonton Police Service strives to achieve the highest standard of professionalism, from management to service delivery. To meet international requirements, the EPS has voluntarily invited independent assessors from across North America to scrutinize all aspects of the services that we provide.  The assessors that will review our services represent the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). In 1988, Edmonton became the first police servicein Canada to achieve international CALEA accreditation.  We encourage  you to read more about this April 26 forum

Community Leagues interested in finding long term tenants or a partner to share the cost of building a new hall are invited to a city-sponsored workshop on April 7.   Called “Meeting Spaces,” the workshop is scheduled for 3:30 – 6:00 p.m. at the Old Timers’ Cabin (9430-99 Street).

The EFCL is working with the City of Edmonton’s Next Generation Committee to help bring more 18-40 year olds into community leagues.  In order to provide a little extra incentive, the two groups are lining up some cash prizes for community leagues that take up the challenge. 

The Elmwood Community League was awarded $294,667 to redevelop the John Devoldere Memorial Park.

 In spring, when the snow is slow to go, it is always great to hear about Front Yards in Bloom preparing for the awards and soliciting leagues to run the program in their neighbourhood. Last year’s program saw unprecedented participation from our leagues with national award to Edmonton for the cooperative efforts and programs within Edmonton’s communities.

 For the Green Challenge Leagues that attended the presentation evening at Montrose Hall on March 19 there was a wheelbarrow full of information and inspiration from our six presenters.

 A local rugby group, the Rockers, is starting a pilot project to generate interest in the sport of Rugby. They are coordinating meetings with the boards of Leagues that neighbour their clubhouse,

 The EFCL Board of Directors has agreed to sign a three-year agreement with Heritage Days, which will see us continue to operate the rest centre pavilion right next to the bus loop - the same place we were last year.

A number of Edmonton community leagues are searching for ways to welcome newcomers to our city. At a recent meeting of the EFCL’s Integration Project, four leagues recounted their efforts to reach out to recent arrivals.

Approximately one dozen community league representatives met on March 4 to review available ice slots and book their community ice for 2010.

A Transition Initiative is a community working together to look Peak Oil and Climate Change squarely in the eye and address this BIG question:

"for all those aspects of life that this community needs in order to sustain itself and thrive, how do we significantly increase resilience (to mitigate the effects of Peak Oil) and drastically reduce carbon emissions (to mitigate the effects of Climate Change)?"

The City has brought all the facility booking staff into one Facility Booking Unit. This includes staff that book the major facility groupings in and around our Multi-Purpose Recreation Centers (Arenas, Pools, Fieldhouses/Flexi-halls, Gymnasiums, and Sportsfields) together with the staff who manage the rentals/bookings in our Attractions (ex. Fort Edmonton, Muttart Conservatory, Valley Zoo)

Picture a mix between The Amazing Race, Corporate Challenge, City Chase and a GIANT scavenger hunt all rolled into one-- with a focus on building our neighbourhoods and communities.

One of the City’s key projects in 2010 is the new southwest recreation centre, which will advance City Council’s goal of Edmonton becoming one of Canada’s most livable cities. The centre will be a place where people of all ages and abilities can gather to learn, exercise, relax, meet and have fun. Here’s an update on the project:

Hazeldean, Argyll, & Ritchie have had a wonderful soccer program over the last several years which kept 150 kids in play! Organized by Hazeldean until now, they have been unsuccessful in recruiting a program coordinator this year.  We are hoping to find someone new to take on this rewarding opportunity.

 It’s interesting to see how our “living local” idea is picking up steam. No sooner does the EFCL start talking about a campaign that encourages people to find activities close to home – such as community league events – and all sorts of groups want to get involved.

Seniors are a largely untapped resource.  Through a partnership with and existing Seniors Association, Steele Heights transformed its community hall.

The Green Challenge hosted an information evening on November 21 at Riverdale Hall. The conversation and idea sharing flowed along with the wine among the 62 attendees, and two more leagues signed up for the challenge now bringing the total of Leagues that have made a commitment to lowering their carbon footprint to 42!  

The shouts echoed throughout the city last week for Jim Diers, author and former Director of the City of Seattle's Department of Neighbourhoods, and his enthusiastic presentation about how to make your community vision a reality. Jim was brought to town by the City of Edmonton in an effort to kickstart the new initiatives being brought forward this year through the City of Edmonton. Participants were given an opportunity to hear from Jim firsthand about some of the successes he has encountered as he described how the solution to community revitalization isn't just throwing money at the problems, but people; people are the solution

On September 21 the EFCL arranged a meeting to discuss the new model and its impact on leagues historic times and pool facilities they are currently using.

 The Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues has asked the province to leave the disbursement of casino revenue alone, as changes are neither justified nor required.  In a letter to the Solicitor General Fred Lindsay, the EFCL stated that there are a number of good reasons for keeping the current system intact.

HOW DOES MY LEAGUE GET PROMOTED ON TV? At our Volunteer event we headlined two of the wonderful Shaw League Features whose subjects were selected from last year’s winners. Again this year, Shaw will be sending crews to film these amazing heroes and their projects in the community.  Additional coverage includes CBC Interviews with volunteers, and calendars in the Examiner and televised on SHAW.

Weaving the lessons of the past into the future ensures that Aboriginal people traditions will continue to be a large part of Canadian culture. Let us take this opportunity to understand and share Aboriginal culture and learn the beauty and wisdom that makes Aboriginal people special.

The Winter Light festival supports the active spirit and spirited activities that thrive in Edmonton. Silver Skate, Ice on Whyte, and Deep Freeze are just a few of the highlights of our 10 week winter season. These events will ignite a new perspective on Edmonton’s winter spirit and festival culture: a bright string of community gatherings and celebrations – welcoming, all-ages events that invite us to meet winter’s challenges with creativity and joy.

To address the issue of funding, on June 22, Community Leagues, Tennis Alberta, Tennis Edmonton gathered at EFCL Central Office for a meeting to seek City’s, Provincial and or Federal funding to refurbish our community courts.

Reymund Palpal-latoc of Central McDougall Community League believes small actions can accumulate to make a big difference for the better.

In the conference, Engaging Community Dialogue, an open forum was of a great interest to the community representatives. The theme was Traffic Safety in our Communities. The forum was designed to engage community dialogue. Guest speaker Ian Walker, PhD; Psychology Department, University of Bath, U k, identified and discussed three main issues: Speeding, too much driving, and people make mistakes.

Traffic safety is major issue to our communities. It is a shared responsibility of community and transportation department to ensure the roads are safe for all.  Two pilot programs have shown remarkable success

Since the late 1980s, the City has been making 90 minutes per week of public skating in City arenas available to community leagues at the regular rental rates. The city is asking for booking and registration. If you were not aware the details on how to apply are in this article.

It is being proposed the Sunday afternoon Community League Swim at Grand Trunk  be moved to O'Leary Leisure Centre during Grand Trunk's shut down

 Last year’s launch of Graffiti Wipe Outs was such a hit that Capital City Clean Up’s Graffiti Management Program (GMP) hopes to help even more non-profit groups “clean up” this year.

A Neighbourhood Watch program will reward your participation by making your neighbourhood safer. It is statistically proven that Neighbourhood Watches are effective crime prevention tools.  Starting a program is easy and guided.

The Mediation and Restorative Justice Centre (MRJC) has opened its doors to Edmonton’s 149 community leagues. The centre is offering mediation services - free of charge – to leagues that find themselves tangled in energy-draining disputes. The service is a key part of a memorandum of agreement struck between the centre and the EFCL last month.

Hockey Moms & Dads turned hockey registrars have remained loyal to the concept of Community by still requiring a community league membership to participate in EMHA hockey. Joining the bandwagon this year is the Knights of Columbus who procured over $10,000 in membership sales.

Most community leagues would like to see another promotion with the Edmonton Eskimos and a strong majority support the inclusion of paid advertising on the EFCL’s website and newsletter, according to feedback received from representatives attending the Oct. Regular General Meeting.

The Edmonton Federation of Community is taking applications for Phase Two of its infrastructure assessment program.  Similar to Phase One, the program is designed to review the structural condition and energy efficiency of community league halls.

Since being launched October 1, the Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Unit (SCAN) has received more than 150 complaints about problem properties and has successfully resolved 56 of those complaints.
