We have seen a number of leagues start a successful Skate Loaner Program at their rinks and it has definitely improved the usage.  Essentially, a skate storage area is created where skates are stored by size. Kids come and sign out the skates.  That simple and we can get you the skates!

EFCL Weighs in On Residential Speed Reduction Project

In an effort to help the city get gauge the success of the 40 km/hour residential speed limit project, the EFCL held a meeting of the affected leagues and summarized their views.
 
In short, the leagues liked the lower speed limit, so long as it is enforced, on roads within their community.  They would also like to see additional traffic calming measures taken on collector roads on the edge of their community to help reduce traffic speed in those locations.

Edmonton community leagues were given an unprecedented opportunity on May 27 to meet and discuss issues with provincial cabinet ministers and Edmonton backbench MLAs, thanks to a date the EFCL was able to secure on the provincial Cabinet Tour.  Approximately 150 community league members (representing 60 community leagues), along with five EFCL board members, all seven EFCL staff and four Community Services staff members took advantage of the opportunity to meet with nine members of cabinet and nine backbench MLAs in a 90 minute session at Balwin Community League Hall.

Costs of Playgrounds Unmanageable

A number of provincial MLAs say the cost of playgrounds could come down if the City of Edmonton would only play along.  At a June 4 meeting with the EFCL at the Provincial Legislature, Employment and Immigration Minister Thomas Lukaszuk said groups in St. Albert or Spruce Grove can build the same playground for 50-60% of the cost paid by Edmonton groups, due to the shortage of approved contractors in Edmonton, restrictions on volunteer labor and the standards required by the city administration. For example, he cited the city’s desire for concrete garbage containers, which cost $9,600 each.

Hockey Registrars to sell a Corporate Rated Community League Membership

 The Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues is urging both Edmonton school boards to adopt a new strategy to deal with surplus place in public schools.  The strategy is quite simple. It calls for the boards to work with partners, such as community leagues, to find productive uses for surplus space – as opposed to shutting down the school.

City Plans Residential Speed Limit Reduction Pilot Project

The speed limit of 50 km/hr will be lowered in three-to-five communities next year as the city looks for ways to address the speeding issue in residential areas.  Under a pilot program recommended by EFCL and approved October 6 by City Council's Transportation and Public Works Committee, the maximum speed in these neighborhoods will be lowered to at least 40 km/hr and perhaps as low as 30 km/hr.

An opportunity now exists for community leagues to let Edmontonians know about their accomplishments and activities through the Examiner’s new UR Edmonton website. Individuals can register on UR Edmonton, then start posting meeting schedules and sports registration dates, articles on community events, blogs on issues facing communities and photos of community leagues in action.  It’s also a great way to win up to $2,000 for your community league.
