Leagues Encouraged to Reach Out to Local Artists

The EFCL is encouraging its member leagues to reach out to artists in their area, as a way to develop new programs and attract new members.

Whether they be musicians, dancers, sculptors, painters or poets, many artists are looking for venues to showcase their talent. They also need space to hone their talents and projects to work on.

Community leagues can often help fill that void.

Those leagues with halls can offer local artists space to practice and perform, as well as hold classes. Other leagues might want to help sponsor a mural or art-in-the park project.

“We know some leagues, like Alberta Avenue and Belgravia, are well along with developing a relationship with local artists,” noted Allan Bolstad, EFCL executive director.

“However, we think there is a significant potential for many more leagues to get involved.”

In order to help the process along, the EFCL hosted John Mahon, the executive director of the Edmonton Arts Council (EAC), at the federation’s Regular General Meeting on Oct. 25. He gave the leagues a taste of what they can do. In order to expand upon these ideas, a workshop has been scheduled for November 24, 7:00 pm at Alberta Avenue Hall, 9210 - 118 Avenue. Alberta Avenue, Belgravia, and Riverbend Community Leagues have been asked to make a presentation along with the Edmonton Arts Council.
