Great Community League Quilt!
By admin @ 7:45 PM :: 1585 Views :: 2 Comments :: :: Community Programs & Activities, EFCL News

One last summer holiday project to promote your league event ...

84 Leagues have claimed participation in September 18th so far and are posted on our website.  Check out the map.  By Sunday September 19th, we hope that every Edmontonian will know about and want to join their local community league.

In order to promote community league membership month and our September 18th Community League Day, we will be hosting a special promotional event, press conference and aerial photo in Churchill Square on Monday, September 13th. Together with City Council and other partner organizations we will be replicating a map of Edmonton with helium balloons and a patchwork quilt promoting the various events happening on Saturday September 18th.  We will be taking the photo at 1030AM from the roof of Stanley Milner Library.

To make the display extra-special, we wanted to put together a quilt with a 5x5' piece of fabric decorated by each of our community leagues. This is where we need your help. And don't worry it could even take just 15 minutes if you are rushed! Just paint or use a felt marker to write your league name onto a sheet!

This quilt would be on display from 10AM-6PM and would allow workers and shoppers downtown to checkout the display and find out what is happening in their neighbourhood. It would also make a fantastic photo opportunity for the media and will raise awareness of all the amazing things happening in Edmonton that community leagues do. We really hope to have your support in this event, as it would really be something neat and different and would hopefully be a great story to tell and get people interested and curious about volunteering and belonging to their neighbourhood community league!

WHAT WE NEED FROM EACH LEAGUE:

A 5 foot by 5 foot piece of fabric (cotton or cotton poly blend with edges finished) with your name (without the Community League eg. Duggan, Oliver, Brookview etc.) Delivered to the EFCL office by Wednesday September 8th or attend a quilting bee below. We will even send one of your league members a sheet of fabric if that would be easier.

SEWING BEE:
WE are hosting two quilting  bees where we will attach your square:
at Ritchie Community League 7727 - 98 Street
on Friday September 10 at 7:00 pm until the party stops,

or at Parkdale-Cromdale Community League   11135 – 85 Street
on Saturday September 11 at 1:00 pm

Food & refreshments served at both.

and tentatively at EFCL Offices, 7103 – 105 Street
on Sunday September 12 from 12:00 pm (call to confirm first – we may finish at Parkdale – 780-707-5610)

See the work come together as you use our supplies to create your own special quilting square or help others with their squares.  We will be sewing all of the sheets together starting  September 10 at 3:00 pm at Parkdale and if need be September 11 at EFCL Offices, 7103 – 105 Street, from 12:00pm  so if you can volunteer to help us sew, bring a machine.  Or if you can’t make a quilting bee get your sheet in by the September 8 deadline, that would be most helpful!

THE SPECIFICS:
- 5x5 piece of fabric your choice (Cheap is fine $1/yard)
- We can provide you one by request if you call 7804372913
- Any color is fine or pattern is fine for your sheet. Decorate it however you want.
- Name must be large, distinct, and clear (we are doing an aerial photo remember!) just your league name, not to include "Community League" eg "DUGGAN" not "DUGGAN CL"
- You can spray paint it, felt pen it, weave it out of corn husks, glue things to it, let your playschool put their handprints on it, do whatever you would like! Just make the league name prominent - big and readable!

DUE: Wednesday, Sept 8th to the EFCL office or at one of the Quilting Bees
UNVEILED AT CHURCHILL SQUARE: Monday September 13th.

IF YOU DON'T SEND IN A SHEET:
We will have to paint your name on a sheet here, but it won't be as personalized nor look as exciting.

I know I know – what the heck do we keep dreaming this stuff up for?!  Because it is fun.  Hope to see you there.  Please email if you might come so I can organize refreshments.

How is this being spread to the leagues? Your time line is REALLY short!

We have great response and take up by leagues. Whatever leagues don't participate this year will be sorry once they see the news spread and for sure contribute next year! As with our SEptember 18 celebration which has 90 leagues participating our members can recognize a good idea when they see it!
