EFCL Selects Legal Services Provider

The EFCL is pleased to announce that it has selected Edmonton-based RMRF (Reynolds Mirth Richards and Farmer) as its legal advisor for the next three years. The firm will also be recommended supplier to the federation‘s 149 member leagues over the three-year term of the contract.
"We very much look forward to working with RMRF and have no hesitation in telling our leagues to give them a try as well," stated EFCL President David Gibbens. "We believe they have the experience and skill sets we need."
RMRF emerged as the successful bidder through a Request For Proposal issued by the EFCL in mid-April. This is the first time the EFCL has gone through this process for legal services. It is also the first time the federation is recommending a legal firm to its member leagues.
Important qualities highlighted in the firm‘s proposal was its experience in dealing with charities and non-profit-organizations, including its recent work with Argyll Community League in successfully overturning the city‘s decision to locate a new Velodrome in the area.
The firm also convinced the court in this case to award Argyll three times the standard rate for legal costs, stating that the city should have known and followed its rules for consultation and hence placed a small, vulnerable organization in a difficult financial spot.
"That was impressive," Gibbens noted, adding that the cost structure presented by 34-lawyer firm was also the most competitive of the bidders.
In addition to working on planning and development issues, RMRF is able to help leagues with concerns about their bylaws, accident claims and director‘s liability. The firm also has a lawyer who specializes with charitable incorporation and filing matters.
"We see this as a great opportunity for ourselves," noted Kelsey Becker Brookes, a partner with RMRF. "We‘re pleased to be working with the EFCL and its members."
