YNC is a nature focused program with the goal of teaching children (primarily aged 5-10) and their families about nature. YNC membership kits and Explorer Days provide educational resources and opportunities for activities that promote being outdoors, observing nature, scientific investigation, environmental stewardship, and healthy living. YNC strives to share the excitement of discovering nature and developing a younger generation of naturalists who are both knowledgeable in natural history and ecology and prepared to take action on behalf of the environment. Members of Young Naturalists explore and discover the natural world through hands on activities where they learn about plants, birds, bugs, fish and mammals, and the habitats where they are found. Young Naturalists work directly with a network of nature oriented organizations and institutions throughout Alberta, sharing resources for the purpose of education and creating excitement in youth about nature. The Young Naturalists program is aimed at the family becoming active as a unit where families will be encouraged to engage in nature activities with a focus on exploring the wild outdoors.

As one of the Edmonton Board members of RETA (Responsible Electricity Transmission for Albertans), I thought I would update Edmonton community league members on our most recent progress to get the proposed 500 kilovolt double-circuit Heartland power line buried whenever it runs near homes, schools, daycares, hospitals and environmentally sensitive areas:

You reduce your personal environmental impact.
Conventional electricity production is among the largest industrial sources of carbon dioxide, a primary greenhouse gas linked to climate change. Electricity production is also a major source of pollutants that contribute to poor air quality and smog conditions. Leading environmental groups, including WWF-Canada, the David Suzuki Foundation and the Pembina Institute, advocate choosing clean, renewable power as a meaningful action that individuals can take to help address the global issue of climate change. Buying green electricity from a green provider reduces your personal electricity-related emissions footprint.
