BACKGROUNDER – The Wecan Food Basket Society
The Wecan Food Basket Society is a not-for-profit organization ensures families and individuals proper food security by providing the opportunity to buy fresh meat and produce at a significant savings from retail.
The program is membership-based and open to anyone to join. Every month, members place their orders by the first Friday and pick up their food on the third Thursday or Friday.
Annual memberships are just $5 and a sample meat and produce order for $20 consists of:
½ kg Lean Ground Beef 1 kg Apples 1 kg Potatoes
1 kg Beef or Pork Roast 1 kg Bananas 2 lb bag of Carrots
1 kg Chicken Thighs 1 kg Oranges 1 kg Onions
The design of the program is to ensure that families and individuals have enough healthy and nutritious food towards the end of the month when money tends to get tight. We operate depots in churches, daycares and community centres throughout the Edmonton area.
The Food Basket operates primarily on the volunteer efforts of our members. We encourage all members to volunteer at their community’s depot.
