101 Parties Promoted on I News 880

|
CHRISTINE BREMNER, EFCL VP wrote: "Wasn't that a party? Hamburgers, hot dogs, chili, corn on the cob. Fruit, donuts, cake, pie and ice cream. Recorded rock 'n roll and live music, art shows, carriage rides, treasure hunts and contests galore. The people who really made out like bandits: those who rent bouncy tents. I made it to eight events on Saturday, showing the flag between noon and four. I was also in time for the awarding of the United Cycle prize of a family of bikes to Emily Legary of Montrose. Emily is the mother of five boys, and, says her son Christian, two of the family bikes were stolen over the summer. We couldn't have picked a better winner ourselves. Everyone said they were pleased at the number of memberships sold and contacts made."

Community League Day a Success
Good day everyone,
Community League Day was a huge success and there were some great community events in District B on Saturday. I visited Balwin, Belvedere, Kilkenny, McLeod, Steele Heights, Lago Lindo and ended the day by celebrating Rosslyn Community League's 50th Anniversary on Saturday night!
Here is a brief blog and tons of photos from seven community events in District B!
Please feel free to use the photos on your own community league site.
It was a good day for folks in communities across Edmonton!
Cheers,
---
David Dodge
President & District B Rep.

SIX tools for you to think about
as you are brainstorming what events you would like to hold:
1) Food and Drink Sponsorships - Visit your local coffee shop for sponsorship. Many will giveyou free coffee, cups, and trimmings for your league event if you just ask! Safeway, Sobeys and other grocery shops will also contribute baking if you approach them soon enough and ask. To see a list of local businesses in your area check out www.livelocal.ca
2) Event Planning -There are many events that you can put together instantly with the help of other community organizations, local businesses and partners.
Edmonton Public Library: Have you contacted your local branch about them bringing programming or storytime over to your community league day event?
Sports organizations: Have you thought of asking your local soccer coach to try and set up a net and balls for a friendly game of neighbourhood pick-up soccer?
Local business partners: Many local businesses would be willing to make a small donation in goods, services, prizes or cash contributions if you ask them and write a letter. Consider creating a template letter explaining your community league event and approaching local businesses and services within your league boundary
4) Don’t forget your CRC! - Contact your CRC and ask them if you can get out some of the great
Resources already available in your community or that the city can contribute.
5) Even a small event brings neighbours together!!! We will promote your event even if it is just a dozen neighbours hosting a coffee party at your community hall. You can always organize a bigger fall festival next year!
Quick Idea: Post a flyer on your website inviting neighbours to a potluck picnic at your hall
6) This is your chance to make a first impression on new members
Do you remember your first meeting with your community league? Why did you decide to become a member? Who made you feel belong?
1. Try to have material ready explaining to new residents what the league does and why they should join.
2. Make new residents feel welcome and show them that leagues can be fun!
3. Make sure to promote the dates of your meetings, the dates of your future block parties or events, and any other ways they can get involved!
4. Have a contact list and get everyone to write down their name and phone number so you can contact them and invite them to future events.
5. Remember to ask them what their interests are and what they would like to do before nominating them for a board position. It is important to let them know that as a volunteer they can make things happen and new ideas are always welcome!
