FAQ: Why do I need to have a community league membership to participate in sports?
The Community League structure that exists in Edmonton is unique and has grown to 150 leagues since 1917. It was volunteers from the leagues that formed the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues - EFCL and it was EFCL that organized committees to start the minor soccer, minor hockey, ringette, and basketball programs in the city. As the sports grew, the committees were able to then form their own associations.
Soccer is still run by Community League volunteers, and hockey and ringette players still benefit from the rink and recreation facilities built and funded by the work that volunteers from community leagues have done.
These sports associations intend to remain loyal and continue to support community and the leagues that built them.
