E.F.C.L. TALENT SHOW RULES & REGULATIONS 2009

Performing Arts Standing Committee recognizes the fact that standard procedures are required for a fair and smoothly run competition.
Registration Information
 

1.        Contestants must be Edmonton Federation of Community League members. Contestants from surrounding areas MUST pay a participant fee (at the same time as the registration fee) and are only being permitted to participate in the group categories. There is a maximum 1/3 associate member in any group or ½ in duet.

2.        Contestants must be within 5-17 years of age with birth dates calculated as of December 31st, midnight of the preceding year. Example: the year is 2008, a competitor born Feb 28th, 1991, would compete in the 17 years age group.

3.        Duets, trios, and groups must calculate the average age (7.4 average age enters 7 years and 7.5 average enters 8 years category).

 

4.        Contestants aged 4 years and 18 years may enter only if the average age of the duet, trio, or group is a minimum 5 years or a maximum 17 years respectively.

5.        Registration fees are to be set annually at the discretion of the committee. The 2009 fees are $25 (for each title) for the first three entries and $20(for each performance) per entry thereafter. Groups are $15 per person. (Four or more) Early bird registration is $20.00 per title starting from now until December 31st 2009

 

6.        Fees are payable upon registration. Refunds are allowed up to the registration deadline only.

7.        Registration is on from now until Friday January 30th,,2009. Drop-in can be made during office hours at7103-105street, Edmonton AB. There will be a late penalty charge of $10 after the. deadline. Acceptance of Registration depends on availability of space, Mail to EFCL, Talent Show, 7103-105Street Edmonton, AB., T6E 4G8 or visit www.efcl.org.
 
8.        *Music MUST be on a burned CD (no cassette tapes). NOTE: The music used for each performance MUST be the only musical selection on the CD. Please label ALL CD’s and books. Failure to comply will result in marks deducted for that performance.

 

9.        A performance number can only be entered in one category.

10.     Contestants can enter any number of categories given the above noted restrictions.

 

11.     Participants will be notified of their time, 3-4 weeks prior to the event. (It is up to the parent to look after this information).

 

12.     *Teachers or parents must check all selections. This is a family friendly event. Absolutely no suggestive content or foul language will be accepted and use of either will result in disqualification.

General Information
13.     Contestant must checked in and be ready to perform 1 hour prior to their scheduled performance time. There will be no exceptions. Come prepared!! There is no practice area available.
14.     It is the teachers’ and/or contestants’ responsibility to check in.
15.     All complaints must be made in writing to the E.F.C.L. Performing Arts Standing Committee.
16.     The E.F.C.L. performing Arts Standing Committee will not be responsible for lost or stolen items.
17.     The E.F.C.L. Performing Arts Standing Committee will not be responsible for any personal injury received during the Talent Show.
18.     No person will be allowed to enter or leave during a performance or adjudication.
19.     No flash camera or tripods are allowed. Video cameras will be allowed but a video camera light will NOT be tolerated. Should the usage of any camera or video recorder present a problem, the owner will be asked to stop using the equipment immediately
20.     NO rehearsing in the wings, lobbies, or halls. Come prepared to perform…
21.     Teachers and participants ONLY backstage. Under no circumstances will Parents be allowed backstage. This year, measures will be taken if this rule is broken.

 

Instrumental

22.     In the instrumental categories, one selection to be performed and melodies are permitted ONLY when the segmentation has no pause. Contestants will be penalized if selection is not memorized. Adjudicator MUST have ORIGINAL sheet music of selection. Trio categories without scores will be allowed and adjudicated separately. All categories and classed well be established at the discretion of the Committee.
  • All instrumental categories have a time limit of 4 minute and 30 seconds.
  •  Music selection must fit the category of popular or classical and will be checked.

 

Voice

23.     In the vocal categories contestants must provide their own accompaniment, if needed. Duet/Trios must include harmony except 5-7 years olds. Group s and choral must include harmony. No voice allowed on accompaniment for Solo, Duet/Trio with the exception of karaoke. Musical created sounds may be used. Sheet music for vocalists is NOT required. All vocal entries have a time limit of 4 minutes and 30 seconds except the karaoke categories, which have a 5-minute time limit.

 

Musical Theatre

24.     These category comprise of singing acting and costumes, failure to comply to these component will result in deduction of mark.

 

Dance

25.     In the dance categories group sizes are as follows:
  • Solo:                               one contestant performing a routine.
  • Duet/Trio:                      Two or three contestants performing a routine.
  • Group (small):                              Four to nine contestants performing a routine.
  • Group (Large):                              Ten to 19 contestants performing a routine
  • Line:                               20 or more contestants performing a routine.
For dance, small and large group will not be separated unless numbers warrant.

 

26.     Dance is timed from the first dance movement to the last dance movement seen.

  • Solos:                      Song and Dance –21/2minute (*Pre recorded vocals are not permitted during the “song” portion).
  • All other Solos:     2 minute
  • Ethnic and Novice 3 minute
  • Duet/Trio:                               4 minute (background vocals are allowed on Group Song and Dance)
  • Group Dance:        20 or more dancers
  •  Line:                       Minimum 5 minutes to maximum 10 minutes
27.     For dance one selection of music on a CD ready to play. It is strongly recommended that all contestants have a back up CD.

 

Awards
28.     Contestants will be judged on both technique and showmanship.
29.     All entries will be tined and any extension of the allocated time limit will result in automatic disqualification from the competition. The tine keepers and adjudicator decision will be final
30.     Absolutely no prompting or directing will be tolerated. This will result in disqualification.
31.     Any approaches made to the adjudicators will result in disqualification.
32.     A competitor may restart but cannot receive a gold medal or cash award.
33.     Medals are presented as follows:
  • Gold – First place standing: Only one gold medal is presented per category. If only one participant is in the category, they must get 90% or over to get gold standing. Gold medallists in some categories will receive a trophy or medal. Trophies are returned each year. Trophies are being phased out except in the group categories.
  • Silver- Second place standing (ties allowed)
  • Bronze- Third place standing (ties allowed)
34.     Non-competitive Category: Participants will follow same guidelines as in competitive category but will not qualify for marks, medals, and trophies or cash awards but will receive written and verbal adjudication. An entrant may compete in competitive and non-competitive but not in the same category.
35.     Cash awards are awarded at the adjudicator’s discretion based on “top Mark” with a minimum of five showmanship awards given. Smaller categories with few participants will be combined. Thirty cash awards were given out this past year and over $1,600.00 in prize money.
36.     Cash awards are presented at the Finale Showcase. Approximately 15 participants will be asked to perform in the Finale Showcase on Sunday afternoon April 13th at Stanley Milner Library. Participants are chosen based on highest marks and proportionally represent vocalists, dancers, and instrumentalists. Five participants from the NOVICE CATEGORY will perform, as well as a past winner.
*Adjudicators will pick Seven Top Awards to be announced at the Finale Showcase and on the website.
