THE EVENT

Part of the Challenge is to a Photo Scavenger Hunt.  The teams have to travel around the city to a large variety of locations such as LRT Platforms, buses, Telus World of Science, and libraries to name a few. Below a few popped by Park(Ed) and got their picture. View Community League photos on flickr   For a complete list of the scavenger tasks download this pdf.

“Can It” Challenge
Below leagues get creative for a worthy cause at the “Can It” Challenge! Hosted by The Works Art & Design Festival, teams made sculptures from donations of dried or canned foods. All food goes to the food bank.

First Breakfast Draws League High Fivers

A total of 28 community leagues have formed teams to take part in Edmonton’s first ever Community Challenge, now underway with events throughout Edmonton. Altogether 420 participants are working to better their communities and win $15,000 in grant funding.
There are many prizes, including an iPad and merchandise from local businesses. The first place team will receive $15,000, that must be used for a capital project or a lasting initiative for league members to enjoy.
This initiaitve wouldn't have happened without the leadership and the hard work of the Next Gen Committee and the other community partners such as Boardwalk Rental Communities.
Please take a look at www.ECC.Edmontonnextgen.ca and see some of the activities going on throughout the month. Pending the success of the program, we will consider making it an annual event with the hope of attracting even more participation.

Leagues are already getting competitive for the 14K

Next Gen and the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues (EFCL) are organizing a fun event, open to all ages, that will reward participants for their participation, civic pride, and their desire to do some good for the local community.  Getting to know your neighbors, having fun with your family and friends, contributing to a local charity, and winning a community fund of $14000 for your community league for a community project – how many more incentives do you need?

Teams of all ages representing a number of Community Leagues throughout the City of Edmonton will participate in a month long challenge to win a community fund that will directly benefit their Community League.  The events will take place throughout the month of June and will include:
  •  Pancake Breakfast and Neighborhood Cleanup on June 5
  • 24 Hour Bike Tune Up on June 12
  • Canned Food Sculpture Competition on June 26
  • Photochallenge Scavenger Hunt (see attachment for details)

see below for details.  Points will be awarded to teams based on criteria established for each event.

The winner will be announced on July 1, at the Canada Day celebrations in Churchill Square!
How can you get involved?  The first step is to encourage your community league to participate and organize a team.  The second step, tell your friends, family, coworkers, local barista or postman and rally the troops!

THE EVENTS

Pancake Breakfast
Kick off your summer in style with a free pancake breakfast for all participants in the Edmonton Community Challenge! Each participant who attends will win a point for their team!

Date: June 5, 2010
Location: 7103-105th St NW, south of Scona High School
Time: 8:30am to 11:30am (if you want to carpool, please let me know)
Points: 1 pt per participant

Neighbourhood Cleanup
Give your community a makeover by participating in the Neighbourhood Cleanup! With materials provided by Capital City Clean Up, teams will earn points for the number of participants and amount of waste and recyclables collected. Money from recycled bottles, collected anytime between June 5th to June 26th will be donated to the Youth Emergency Shelter Society. Bonus points will be awarded for great ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos of notable areas where your team may have gone above and beyond just picking up garbage.

Date: June 5, 2010
Location: 119 St fence to do some graffiti removal (providing the weather holds up for us, plan B is to do a quick litter clean-up if the weather isn't ideal for painting).
Time: if you need a ride or are not sure of the location, please meet us at 11:30am at the PRCL hall otherwise we will see you at 11:45am at 119 St fence
Points: The minimum we can receive is 30 points for showing up, completing task, getting some before and after photos with our passports and the recycling of bottles to contribute towards the YESS donation (I've got a pile stocked up already, so if anyone else has some to contribute, please let me know) and the maximum is 200 points.
24 Hour Bike Repair-a-Thon
Change gears by bringing your bike down to a Bike Repair-a-Thon, hosted by the Edmonton Bicycle Commuters’ Society. Team members will receive points for bringing in their bikes for a tune-up, and bonus points will be awarded for donating adult bikes to the EBC.

Date: June 12, 2010
Location: 10047-80th Ave NW, access through back alley only
Time: Sat 6:00pm thru to Sun 6:00pm (so you go when you have time and you get points for our community)
Points: The minimum we can receive is 20 points but we are already well on the way to much more than that due to the overwhelming pile of bikes we collected at the big bin event that we can donate!
“Can It” Challenge
Get creative for a worthy cause at the “Can It” Challenge! Hosted by The Works Art & Design Festival, teams will make sculptures from donations of dried or canned foods. Points will be awarded for the number of participants, amount of food donated, and the creativity of the sculptures.  So far, we are only one of the two teams registered for this event! Teams can participate in the food donation portion of the challenge even if they are not able to make it for the sculpture challenge.

Date: June 26, 2010
Location: Churchill Square, The Works Art & Design Festival
Time: 9:30am to 4:00pm (but we will be done before that as there is a time limit to build the sculpture).
Points: The minimum we can receive is 30 points but as there is only two communities creating sculptures, we have a really good opportunity to gain a lot more

There is a photo scavenger hunt as well as some other smaller events throughout the month.  Make sure to bring your passport along if you attend, that you can earn points for our community.
